Every year during the Songkran Festival The Ritual Bathing Of The Pillar is performed at Wat Sung, Sao Hai District .
Sao Rong Hai "The Crying Pillar" at Wat Sung is the legend of a golden Malabar ironwood pillar which arrived too late for selection when Bangkok was being built.
It was then floated back up-river but sank at Phai Lom Noi village, Sao Hai District. Centuries passed before villagers started hearing someone crying in the vicinity, this was believed to be a female spirit residing in the pillar.
Villagers held a ceremony to raise the pillar and placed it at Wat Sung on 23th April 1958. From that time, the village has been called Sao Rong Hai.The pillar is a big golden Malabar ironwood .375 metres in diameter and 13 metres in length. During every Songkran Festival, a ceremony of ritual bathing is held to honour the history of the pillar.
